What Happens After Your F-1 Visa Is Approved?
From passport pickup to booking your flight, here’s your next move.
Hey there!
You’ve done it: your F-1 visa is approved! This is a huge step in your journey to studying in the U.S., and we’re so proud of how far you’ve come. But we know this next phase can feel a little uncertain too.
Now that you’ve had your interview and gotten the green light, what comes next? Let’s break it down so you know exactly what to expect.
Step 1: Wait for Passport Pickup or Delivery
After your interview, the consulate will keep your passport to stamp the visa inside. You’ll typically get a notification (via SMS or email) within 5–7 working days letting you know when and where to pick it up—or that it’s been shipped, depending on the option you selected when scheduling your appointment.
Double-check your delivery address or pickup location on the CGI Federal portal to avoid delays.

Step 2: Check Your Visa Stamp for Accuracy
Once you get your passport back, review the visa page carefully. Make sure:
Your name matches your passport exactly
The visa type is F-1
The school listed matches the I-20 you used
The expiration date is valid (it doesn’t impact how long you can stay—it’s about entry, not stay)
If there are any mistakes, contact the consulate immediately.
Step 3: Book Your Flight to the U.S.
You’re allowed to enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the start date on your I-20. Most students arrive 1–2 weeks early to settle in, finalize housing, and get rid of the jet lag.
We recommend booking early for better rates. Fly into major international hubs like JFK (New York), ORD (Chicago), SFO (San Francisco), or DFW (Dallas)—these airports are more streamlined for international arrivals and immigration processing.

Step 4: Join Roam’s Fall 2025 WhatsApp Group + Roam Connect
Moving to a new country can feel like a lot, especially when you’re trying to figure everything out on your own. But here’s the good news: you’re not doing this alone.
We’ve created a Fall 2025 Student WhatsApp Group just for students like you. It’s a space where you can ask questions, share tips, and connect with others who are heading to the U.S. this fall. Whether you’re confused about what to pack, wondering what happens at immigration, or just want to know if anyone else is flying into your city, this group is for you.
And once you’ve joined, don’t stop there. Roam Connect lets you take that one step further. It’s a student directory where you can instantly match with others from your university, hometown, or graduating class. You’ll be able to see who else is flying out from your city, strike up a chat, and maybe even plan to travel together.
Building your support system starts now and we’re here to help you find your people :)
If you’ve got questions about anything—from visas to housing to SIM cards— just hit reply. We’re here to help.
Sincerely,
The Roam Growth Team 🧡
