Make the Most of Your Summer Internship
How to make a lasting impression during your summer internship
Hey there,
If you’ve landed a summer internship—congrats! Whether it’s remote, hybrid, or in-person, this is your chance to get real-world experience, build your network, and show employers what you bring to the table.
But here’s the thing: internships aren’t just about showing up. They’re a stepping stone—and how you show up matters. Let’s walk through a few simple strategies to help you maximize this opportunity and set yourself up for future success.
First Impressions Start Early
Before your first day, take some time to get set up. Review the company’s website and mission, scan recent news or product launches, and revisit your job description so you’re clear on your role. Set up your tech tools—email, Slack, Zoom—and check in with your manager if you haven’t received onboarding details.
On day one, show up on time, introduce yourself confidently, and come with thoughtful questions. First impressions matter—especially in short-term roles like internships.
Ask Questions and Take Notes
Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know.” Employers don’t expect you to know everything—they expect you to be curious, coachable, and proactive.
You’re not expected to know everything. What matters more is showing that you’re curious, coachable, and eager to learn. Don’t hesitate to ask about how your team works, what success looks like in your role, or how your project fits into broader company goals. Keep a simple doc where you jot down key learnings, feedback you’ve received, and challenges you’ve overcome—it’ll help you articulate your impact later.

Complete Your Project and Make a Strong Impression
At most internships, you’ll be assigned a specific project or deliverable. Completing it successfully is one of the most important things you can do. Show that you can take ownership, meet deadlines, and deliver work that adds real value.
Equally important? Make a good impression on the team you're working with. Day-to-day performance matters, but so does how you collaborate, communicate, and support others. Interns who are respected by their teammates and trusted by their supervisors are the ones who are most likely to get return offers—or glowing references when it’s time to job hunt.

Treat It Like a Real Job
Even if your title says “intern,” treat the experience like it’s your full-time job. Be reliable, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly. Show initiative. If you finish early, ask what else you can help with. If you’re stuck, ask for support. That kind of mindset leaves a lasting impression—and can often turn a short-term internship into a long-term opportunity.
Build Relationships That Last
Don’t limit yourself to just fellow interns—take the time to get to know full-time team members. Reach out for short coffee chats or virtual catch-ups to learn about their roles, career paths, and advice for someone early in their journey.
Even one or two genuine relationships from your internship can make a difference later when you’re looking for referrals or exploring full-time roles.
Before You Leave: Ask for Feedback and a Reference
As your internship comes to a close, ask your manager for a short feedback session. What did you do well? What could you improve? If the experience went well, don’t hesitate to ask if they’d be open to being a reference or writing a LinkedIn recommendation.
Update your resume and LinkedIn while everything’s still fresh—you’ll thank yourself later.
