Incoming F-1 Student? Here's What Comes Next

From immigration checks to SIM cards and bank accounts - here’s everything to expect in your first week in the U.S.

Hey there!

We know where you are right now - checking for visa slots, prepping for your interview, maybe even booking your flight. And if your visa is already approved… congrats! 🥳 You’re in the final stretch.

But what comes after the visa?

Your first week in the U.S. can be overwhelming - airport chaos, no working SIM card, expensive health insurance, or figuring out how to eat something that tastes like home.

This week, we’re giving you a sneak peek of what that first week actually looks like - and how to make it easier.

Phone Plan Problems: Solved

“ I landed in the US with no activated SIM card or data. Airport Wi-Fi was slow. My phone didn’t support U.S. phone plan providers.”

We’ve heard this story too many times.

With Roam’s phone plan partners, you can:

  • Buy an eSIM before you fly (no store visits needed)

  • Get plans starting at $8/month

  • Activate the second you land in the U.S.

  • Save more by choosing an annual plan

Health Insurance Without the Shock

U.S. healthcare is expensive. One ER visit can cost hundreds or thousands. That’s why universities make insurance mandatory.

“I paid $950+ per semester for a university plan I never even used.”

With Roam’s insurance partners:

  • Get plans that meet your school’s waiver requirements

  • Pay hundreds less than the university plan

  • Submit proof to waive the default plan (if allowed)

Set Up Banking Before You Fly

“I was charged $15 for every incoming international wire transfer into my account and had to go in person with documents to apply for an account and wait for approval.”

With Roam’s banking partners, you can:

  • Open an account from home - even before you fly

  • Get no-fee international wire transfers

  • Qualify for a credit card without an SSN

What Will You Eat?

“I didn’t have much time time to cook most days because of class and assignments, which led to skipping meals. I’ve missed home-cooked healthy meals.”

The transition is real. That’s why we partnered with The Cumin Club - ready-to-eat, regional Indian meals delivered to your doorstep.

  • Just 5 minutes to prep

  • $5.99 per meal

  • Use code ROAMTCC25 for 25% off
