Do This, Get the Job Offer.
A roadmap to internships and job offers - no fancy experience or perfect grades required.
Hey there!
It’s a new semester - which for many of you, the pressure is on to secure an internship or land that first full-time job soon.
We get it. Between juggling coursework and life in general, it can feel like you’re already behind. But here’s the truth: you don’t need a perfect GPA or a big name on your resume to get hired. What you do need is strategy, consistency, and a willingness to show up where others don’t.
If you follow all the advice in this newsletter, you’ll guarantee yourself a chance at landing an offer!
Let’s break it down:
Use Your Free Time Intentionally (Your Future Self Will Thank You)
College isn’t just about classes and job applications - it’s also about how you use your free time. Watch content that sharpens your career understanding. Try a free certification. Deepen your subject-matter knowledge - not just to get hired, but to feel more confident and capable in your field. The goal isn’t to give up fun, but to be more intentional with your time. Growth doesn’t always happen in class. Often, it’s in the quiet hours when you choose to level up.
It’s Not Just About the Resume - It’s What You Show
If you’ve worked on academic projects, built something during your own time, or contributed to group assignments that you're proud of, showcase them! These real-world problem-solving examples are often more compelling to recruiters than another polished bullet on your resume.
The key? Make it easy for someone to see your work. Link your GitHub, portfolio, Notion page - whatever best shows your thinking. If it’s buried in your laptop, it doesn’t count.
Go to the Places Companies Are Already Looking
You’ve probably heard the advice: “Network more!” But here’s something more actionable: attend competitions, hackathons, and case challenges - especially ones hosted or sponsored by companies. These events aren’t just for fun (although they can be fun); they’re places where employers are actively scouting talent or workshopping real internal problems.
Even if you’re new or unsure of your skills, just being in the room gives you exposure to peers from other universities, professionals in your target field, and potential mentors. Before the event, look up the company reps or guest speakers. Come in with a list of people you’d love to connect with, and follow up afterward. People remember that kind of effort.

Build Real Relationships - Not Just Referral Requests
If you’ve ever messaged someone on LinkedIn asking for a referral and never heard back… you’re not alone. But here’s a shift in approach that works better: instead of leading with an ask, start a conversation.
Try something like:
“Hi [Name], I’m exploring roles in [field] and noticed you work on [specific team]. I’d love to learn more about what your day-to-day looks like and hear any advice you’d have for someone building their portfolio.”
People are much more open when they don’t feel like they’re being used. Real conversations can lead to real opportunities.
Professors Can Unlock Opportunities (But Only If They Know You)
Here’s something most students underestimate: professors can be the door to important opportunities. If they know you - if you’re engaged, responsive, and curious - they’re far more likely to recommend you for hidden opportunities. And even outside of campus events, they can write recommendations, connect you with alumni, or loop you into research.
So participate. Ask questions. Show up to office hours. Not just for the grade - but for the doors they can open.
Use the Right Tools - And Stack the Odds in Your Favor
Applying to jobs is time-consuming, but there are tools that can save you hours and boost your chances:
Simplify.jobs helps autofill repetitive application forms.
Hunter.io lets you find professional emails (great for personalized outreach).
Jobalytics is a browser extension that shows how well your resume matches the job description.
Use multiple job boards - LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, Dice, Handshake - because not all companies post in the same place.
Also, use AI beyond resume writing. For example:
“List early-stage startups in cybersecurity hiring in Chicago.”
You’ll be surprised how much you can dig up.
Don’t Just Do the Work - Talk About It
You could be doing all the right things: building projects, attending competitions, asking for advice. But if no one knows, it’s like shouting into the void. Start sharing your journey on LinkedIn. Post about your projects, reflect on what you're learning, and celebrate small wins.
You never know who’s watching. Recruiters do reach out to students based on what they see online. You just have to give them something to see.
Start small. Stay consistent. And when the opportunities come, you’ll be ready.
We’re rooting for you 🧡
Best,
